Freddy has coached at Kraken for five years — longer than almost anyone on the current team — and holds ISSA certifications in both personal training and nutrition, plus a Functional Kettlebell Instructor credential and a Pain-Free Performance Specialist certification. Long before any of that, he grew up outdoors, hiking Vancouver Island and competing in track and field, and came up through calisthenics before turning it into a coaching career. He still trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu himself.
A good chunk of the building exists because he picked up the tools and built it: shelving, cubbies, and a chunk of the new semi-private room. He also designed and runs the gym's hiking program, taking clients up Burnaby Mountain and eventually Garibaldi.
Clients consistently describe him as easygoing to the point of being a little cheeky — the kind of coach who gives as good as he gets — but he holds the line on the standards just as firmly as anyone else on the team.
